Radio Gdansk News in English: Polish President says everything being done to secure EU border

Poland's President Andrzej Duda has insisted that the country is doing everything it can to secure the country's and the EU's eastern border with Belarus amid the ongoing migrant crisis there.

Poland last week announced a state of emergency in the eastern part of the country in a bid to make management of the situation easier. Speaking in Budapest after meeting his Hungarian counterpart he added that "We are making every effort to protect the EU's frontiers, by every legal and possible means". The two leaders had discussed security issues in the region, especially the Belarus border crisis. His Hungarian counterpart referred to Europe's 2015 migrant crisis and said his country was happy to share its experience in safeguarding the border and its "knowledge about how the frontier should be managed."

Hungary has joined Poland in condemning the decision by the EU to fine Poland over the country's stance on judicial reforms.

The European commission this week asked the EU's top court to start fining Poland over a long-running dispute over so-called "rule of law" provisions enacted by the country. Warsaw has said that a disputed mechanism for disciplining judges will be dismantled, at Brussels request. Poland and Hungary are locked in an ideological battle with the EU over what the two countries say is the protection of their traditional societies from Western liberalism.
