Radio Gdansk News: Director Chloe Zhao became the first Asian-American woman in Oscar history to win the Best Director statuette

The film "Nomadland" made history at the Academy Awards last night after winning Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role.

Director Chloe Zhao became the first Asian-American woman in Oscar history to win the Best Director statuette. Kathryn Bigelow, the only other female director to ever win an Oscar, won for the war drama "The Hurt Locker" nearly a decade ago.

With her performance in "Nomadland" Actor Frances McDormand now has three Oscars under her belt, including wins for "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" in 2018 and the cult classic "Fargo" in 1997.

Sir Anthony Hopkins, who did not attend the events in LA, beat out the late Chadwick Boseman in the Best Actor category, despite Boseman being heavily favored for a post-humous win.

Disappointingly for Polish cinema fans, Dariusz Wolski, the cinematographer for "Nowiny ze świata" walked away empty-handed after Erik Messerschmidt took home the Best Cinematography award for the black and white auteur film "Mank".

Coronavirus restrictions are being eased starting today in Pomerania and other regions of Poland with fewer COVID cases in response to a sustained decline in the number of new infections and deaths.

Beauty salons and hairdressers have been allowed to reopen, while primary schools will use a system of mixed in-person and online education for students in grades 1-3.

During an announcement made last week, Health Minister Adam Niedzielski told reporters that the loosening of the rules represented "...a very cautious step forward".

Tighter restrictions will remain in place for provinces with higher numbers of COVID cases, including the densely populated coal-mining region of Silesia and the central Łódzkie region.
